Hey friends, Welcome to Week 26 of our 52-week journey toward a more peaceful, functional, and joy-filled home! We’re officially halfway through the challenge—can you believe it? This week, we’re heading into the living room to tackle something that tends to get out of control: DVDs, Blu-rays, and streaming media collections.

Week 26: Living Room – Organize DVDs/Media

  • Sort through DVDs, Blu-rays, or streaming media accounts.
  • Reorganize movie or book collections.
  • Dust and clean bookshelves and media units.

Whether you’re a movie buff, a music lover, or a book collector, media clutter can sneak up on you. This week’s focus is all about clearing the chaos, dusting those shelves, and making it easy to find your favorites when it’s time to relax and unwind.

Step 1: Sort Through Your Physical Media Collection

Pull out every DVD, Blu-ray, video game, or CD you own. You might be surprised by how many you’ve accumulated over the years! Create three piles:

  • Keep – Favorites you watch or use regularly
  • Donate or Sell – Movies you haven’t watched in years or didn’t enjoy
  • Trash or Recycle – Scratched or unplayable discs

Dana’s Tip: If you’re hanging on to movies out of nostalgia but never actually watch them, consider digitizing them or checking if they’re available on a streaming service.

Storage idea: These storage containers are perfect for keeping your collection dust-free and stackable, and in some cases, portable.

Step 2: Reorganize Streaming Accounts & Digital Libraries

If most of your media is digital, this is a great time to:

  • Clean up your watchlists
  • Unsubscribe from services you rarely use
  • Organize your digital movie or ebook library into folders or playlists

Streamlining your digital space can be just as satisfying as organizing your shelves!

Step 3: Dust & Clean Bookshelves and Media Units

Once the clutter is gone, let’s give your shelves a proper refresh:

Remove all items from the areas to be cleaned.

  • Use a microfiber cloth or duster to wipe shelves and units
  • Clean screens, remotes, and consoles with electronic-safe wipes
  • Vacuum behind the TV and cords

Once everything is clean and sorted, it’s time to put things back in a way that makes sense for you.

  • Use clear storage cases or a DVD binder to save space
  • Store children’s media in easy-to-reach baskets
